Private tertiary college achieves standardised power protection despite unique challenges

The IT Manager at a private tertiary college in Sydney faced some interesting challenges in creating standardised power protection across two CBD locations.

The Challenges

  • Need for Standardisation
  • Aging Building
  • Allow for Future Relocations
  • No In-house Facilities Team

The Solution

  • Specialist Design & Install Services
  • Scalable & Redundant Power Protection
  • 24/7 Monitoring & Mangement
  • On-site Support & Maintenance

The college has server rooms in two different buildings in Sydney’s CBD. The IT Manager wanted a standardised power protection solution across locations, but one of the server rooms was in an older building with limited power capacity on the distribution board. A common tenancy problem in older buildings.

Specialist Electrical Knowledge Needed

Like many medium-sized businesses, the college doesn’t have any in-house facilities staff and managing power protection for IT systems falls to the IT team. BDC Services was able to fill the gap with its specialist power infrastructure knowledge and expertise.

Standardised Set-up with Customised Connections

BDC Services designed a standardised set-up for their power protection in both locations - including uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs), automatic transfer switches (ATSs), and switched and metered power distribution units (PDUs). The BDC Services team worked with the client’s electrician to customise the power connections for these systems to meet the differing requirements of the power circuits in each building.

Monitoring, Management and Maintenance

All devices are IP enabled to allow 24/7 monitoring from APC by Schneider Electric, with centralised management & monitoring for the IT Manager. To protect the investment, on-site support, hardware warranty extension and scheduled maintenance are also provided by the BDC Services team.

High Level Protection for Now and Flexibility for the Future

It was important for the college not to over-invest in fixed infrastructure that would be left behind if they were to relocate in future. The new solution has minimised fixed infrastructure, provides high level redundancy and power protection, and gives flexibility for future relocation.
